How To Prevent Mold Growth In Your Home

Black mold is a greenish-black type of mold that can cause a variety of health problems in humans. Given the right conditions, molds can thrive anywhere, indoors and outdoors, making it nearly impossible to totally get rid of them. Besides dealing damage to your heath, a black mold infestation can also be costly to fix and can deal just as serious damage to your finances.

If you are worried about mold growing in your home, remember that when it comes to black mold, prevention is always better than trying to find a cure. The key in preventing mold growth is quite simple: moisture control. And thus the best way to keep a check on mold is to keep a check on the moisture levels of your home.

The following are ways you can control moisture indoors and consequently the molds that may thrive on it:

Identify the problem areas and fix them. Take time to go around your home and find the problem areas. If you often find condensation on a window or stains on your ceiling, these could be signs of a problem. Preventing or fixing a mold problem can sometimes be as simple as fixing leaking pipes or a damaged gutter.  In more serious cases, it might take an excavation and waterproofing. Whichever the case, detecting and addressing the problem early can make a huge difference. The longer an infestation goes unnoticed, the more it will cost you and your family’s health and finances.

Make sure that your home has proper ventilation. Your simple daily routine may be encouraging mold growth without you knowing it. Domestic activities such as cooking, taking a bath, and doing laundry can invite mold if done in a place that does not have proper ventilation. Thus it is important that these areas of your home, i.e. kitchen, shower, laundry room, and other high-moisture areas, are properly ventilated. Simply opening your windows and keeping an exhaust fan running can make a difference. If you use air conditioners and / or humidifiers, also make sure to check them on a regular basis as condensation inside these equipment and on their surfaces make for an ideal environment for mold growth.

Dry wet areas right away. Since moisture is the key factor when it comes to mold growth, it is imperative that wet areas are taken care of immediately. In case of a flood, everything must be completely dried, especially carpets, beddings, and furniture. If not, it would be better that they be removed.  Avoid leaving wet clothes inside the washing machine. Hang them out to dry, if possible outdoors or somewhere in the house where there is good air circulation. If there is water seepage in an area in your home or if you have a leaking pipe, or if there’s anything as little as a spill on your carpet, make sure that they are dried within 24-48 hours.

Remember that even if your home can’t be mold-proof, you can at least make it mold-resistant. There isn’t one solution when it comes to solving a mold problem, but knowing how you can prevent it means you won’t have to deal with the problem at all.
